How to Repair a Dead Car Key
Sometimes extreme heat or cold can cause the car key to not function properly. It is best to wait a few minutes before replacing it.
It's quite a hassle when your car keys break and it happens at the most uncomfortable times! There are several ways to fix a broken car key that don't require a new one.
Dead Key Fob Batteries
Modern key fobs allow us to open trunks, doors and tailgates without having to search for a key. Some key fobs even come with an inbuilt key that can be used to start our vehicles. However, these devices are dependent on a small battery that powers their remote functions. If the battery is dead then the key fob will not be able to send a signal to trigger the vehicle. There are many methods to fix a dead vehicle key fob.
First, try to determine if the key fob is actually dead. If it seems to be dead, you will have to replace the batteries. You can do this yourself by removing the fob from its clip or using a screwdriver with a flat head. You should not apply too much force or you may damage the fob. Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs fell off the tiny key ring on the top, where it joins the keyfob. It appears to be made of extremely soft plastic or metal. I've drilled the hole and wet-sanded the surface to make it more durable. However, I'm sure that's not helping.
I've also attempted to wrap the broken part of ring with clear tape but it didn't look to be any better. It's a shame because I rely on the small split rings to keep my keys in place.
If the key fob's case itself is broken it is usually possible to open up the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't dead).
